Electoral scene

It has been fighting the BJP at every level, so much so that a good number of Congress workers on the ground are drifting towards it. AAP’s fighting spirit is drawing a large section of political workers outside the fold of the BJP, even as most other opposition parties have largely been complacent. Quite contrary to the allegation of being “BJP’s B-team” that AAP has had to face from many corners, it has shown a special perceptiveness to effectively counter the saffron party.
Its posturing is that of an anti-ideological and incorruptible force, driven by the immediate needs of people. It has carefully, but controversially, refrained from being drawn into traditional debates that has only strengthened the BJP over the last eight years. The denial to be clubbed with any form of traditional political parties has kept its novelty alive – even amidst the consistent growth of the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose leadership has successfully attracted a majority of the Hindu population in large parts of India. Like Modi, Kejriwal is also perceived as an outsider in a corrupt political system, and resultantly a fresh alternative to the BJP by a majority of people, not merely Hindus.
The only aspect in which the AAP lags behind the BJP is its limited presence in states – a factor that can enthuse people but not garner their votes at the moment. Both AAP and BJP know this well. Thus, AAP is striving hard to remain relevant and attract public attention.
It has refused to be drawn into polarising discussions, and at the same time foregrounded issues of the poor by highlighting economic inequalities in Indian society. It has spent crores in advertisements to highlight even its minutest of achievements – often half-truths – to publicise its “unique” governance model and capture the public imagination. In short, Kejriwal has tried to beat Modi at his own game. Of course, the scale of such an exercise is tilted in the BJP’s favour, given the unrestricted corporate support that the saffron party enjoys. However, what the AAP has done with its limited resources can’t remain unseen.

2024 is no longer a ‘done deal’ for BJP. Bihar coup has changed India’s political landscape Yogendra Yadav 10 August, 2022
Thinking of India’s electoral map as three strips shows BJP only has 'dominance' over one. With no NDA left now, except in name, 2024 will be a challenge.
Yogendra Yadav
India’s electoral map as three strips. The first—the coastal belt—runs from West Bengal to Kerala. Add a few states like Punjab and Kashmir and you have a region where BJP is not the dominant political force. This region has 190 Lok Sabha seats. Last time the BJP won only 36 seats here (42, if you include its allies).
Regions it dominates—the north-west, comprising the Hindi heartland; minus Bihar and Jharkhand; plus Gujarat. The BJP has swept this region, characterised by a straight fight between BJP and its major rival (mostly Congress, except in Uttar Pradesh) both in 2014 and 2019, winning 182 (including 3 for small partners) out of the total 203 seats last time.
it needs another 100 seats from the remaining 150 in the remaining ‘middle belt’ comprising Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Bihar (add Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur) where the BJP faces a divided opposition. In 2019, the BJP won 130 seats here, 88 on its own. This is where the BJP allies made a big difference: With Karnataka slipping away, a repeat of 25 out of 28 looks highly improbable in the state. This could be halved if the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) come to an understanding (Deve Gowda’s rushing to welcome Nitish Kumar’s switch could be a straw in the wind). The fall of Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra has, inadvertently, cemented the Maha Vikas Aghadi as an electoral coalition in 2024. If so, there is no way the BJP-Shinde duo can repeat the BJP-Shiv Sena tally of 41 out of 48 seats in 2019. If we assume that the BJP does nearly as well in Assam and hill states as it did last time, we are still looking at a loss of at least 10 seats for the BJP, and about 25 if you count the allies as well.

Indian Electoral Politics: Shifting Sands
Seven decades down the line the electoral scene has changed for the worse and is currently dominated by emotive issues. The foundation of derailing the ‘this worldly’ issues was the Ram Temple movement. This movement became stronger after the implementation of Mandal Commission report. Since then the domination of emotive, identity issues is on the rise. This is reflected by the fact that in 2019, no party dared to utter the word secularism, as claimed by the winner of 2019 elections, Mr. Narendra Modi himself. He presented it as a trophy for the efforts of RSS-BJP’s political success.

It is in this track that any issue can be given a religious turn as we witnessed its peak in the coining of phrase ‘Corona Jihad’. This showed how electoral politics can be reduced merely to game of identity issues. BJP has mastered this art over a period of last few decades. The media, which is prostrating to BJP ideology, is putting its best efforts to magnify the doings of communal stream.
Not to be left behind, Arvind Kejrival is trying to compete which these divisive efforts revolving around identity issues, in his own unique smart ways. The AAP, which in a way, is an alternate model of communal politics; is playing its Hindutva/communal card with shrewdness. Kajriwal party is also an example of blind subservience to the dictator by the other leaders of that party. As Kejriwal demanded this; all his cronies, stated saying the same. The peak of this was Atishi Marlena, who stated that this demand of Laxmi-Ganesh is not merely Kejriwal demand, it is the aspiration of 130 crore Indians! Most of the dictatorial tendencies believe they are speaking for the whole country. This is a duplicate of what Narendra Modi, when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat, used to say that he is talking on behalf of Five Crore Gujratis. India needs a party which can accommodate all sections of society with equality and dignity, apart from welfare; it also promotes employment and proactively deals with marginalized sections of society. We need a party where religion is not mixed with politics. For many, AAP began with a big promise for a better politics, but its reality is there for all to see with its trajectory leading to demanding Laxmi and Ganesh on currency notes and dumping of Jan Lokpal in the dustbin of Hisotry!
