Electoral scene
Modi lost while winning. Because no matter how it is spun, the fact is that this election was about - only about -- Modi.
Modi was omnipresent, through his rallies, his roadshows, the scripted interviews at the rate of one a day, and the wall-to-wall coverage tame media, acting as a force multiplier, voluntarily accorded him.
He was the candidate in every constituency -- the party said so; he even said so himself.
Modi was omnipotent -- no law applied to him; the Model Code of Conduct was ignored with impunity; the dozens of complaints filed against his hate-filled rhetoric 'disposed of' by the institution that was sworn to uphold free and fair elections.
Modi was omniscient -- the non-biological leader teleported from the heavens who could see, and therefore shape, not only the India of 2047 but even peer into the mists of time and produce a 1,000-year vision, albeit sans operational detail.
Modi won a Pyrrhic victory. For the first time in his political career, he failed to carry his party to even a working majority -- and again, for the first time in his career, he finds himself in a situation where he cannot rule by dictatorial fiat.
He needs the support of two major allies, neither known for constancy -- and when it comes to government formation, he faces the difficult task of satisfying their ambitions while holding on to key portfolios such as Finance, Defense, and Home.
That is half the battle. He then has to contend with a stressed economy (the electorate has clearly signaled that it is not buying the Modi version of India Shining), an empowered Opposition, and a fractious populace, and to confront the fact that he cannot, as he has in his first two terms, rule by imperial fiat; he can no longer push his wills and his whims through Parliament by the brute force of a majority.

India has potential to capture a large share of global defense market: Mark Matthews

... FIIs have particularly loved, in fact the investing community has particularly loved the work done by this current government even in the second term. How much probability would you assign that once he comes in place the reform momentum which the Street was directly observing will continue in the same breath?
I think it will continue and, of course, much is contingent on how many seats the BJP are able to secure and my sense is that there are many good pollsters who are on the ground and getting a very fresh read of the votes at the exit stations and so if there is some disastrous result brewing, I believe those pollsters would have gotten wind of it by now and they are all in the employ of fund managers and fund managers would have been selling. So, I am not expecting a bad result for the government and I do expect a continuation of its reform policies.

ETMarkets analysed sectors that may see traction when markets resume trading on Monday.
PSU stocks across sectors are expected to remain in focus in the run-up to the result date and even after it. Counters in defence, railway, public sector banks (PSBs) may see a sharp upturn.
Ever since voting for the Lok Sabha election began, the market capitalisation of BSE PSU index has increased by nearly Rs 7 lakh crore with stocks of state-owned entities, now being categorised as "Modi stocks", rallying up to 87%.

S Sen on WA: A bit of crystal gazing at my end.
This is what I had noted on April 6th (ref.: < https://groups.google.com/g/greenyouth/c/qjnZc6x1-5A/m/vQCTjrIDAQAJ >):
In 2014, the BJP had polled 31% of polled votes.
While this was pretty much slated to come down in 2019, it actually went up to 37% -- under the impact of Pulwama-Balakot.
This time, as yet, we had Ram Mandir: Modi has provided (homeless) Lord Ram an appropriate shelter. Then bursts forth the Electoral Bonds. Of course, the narratives of Vikash vs. Vinash form the larger backdrop. As compared to 2019, (i) the poison of Hindutva -- with a proactive state machinery at its service -- has spread wider and deeper and (ii) the "field" has turned significantly more tilted -- via the blatant weaponisation of ED, IT, CBI, ECI and also the mainstream media and the Courts largely going with the regime.
One significant "event" has taken place since then. The Prajjwal Revanna scandal that just burst forth in April end. The mainstream media has done its utmost to minimise the effects and reasons are hardly effective vis-a--vis unreasoned fanaticism.
Nevertheless there must have been some impact at least.
Even if Modi has done all that he could do -- leveraging his position of power and privilege -- to infuse poison of the most lethal sort and polarise, there's no Balakot this time. Not even any Anna Hazare or Baba Ramdev batting for him.
On the flip side we have free ration consisting of 5 kgs of food grains per month for eighty(?) crore "poor", many constructed toilets (particularly important for rural women as it saves one the worrisome bother of going to the field after darkness) and also houses under the PMAY scheme. This time there is also an entirely new and disturbing development that has taken place: the voting figures, as reported by the ECI, went up significantly in multiple instalments with the EC, for a long while, stubbornly refusing to share the absolute number of votes cast in glaring contravention of long-honoured past practice in this regard. Its actual reasons and implications are as yet unknown.
To cut it short, in 2019, BJP had won 303 seats and in 2014, 282 seats.
Given the combination of underlying factors, which also include a considerably rejuvenated Congress with youthful Rahul Gandhi, presenting a very friendly and affable face, peddling 5 Nyays and 25 Guarantees in right earnest, at its head and higher opposition unity index than in '14 and '19 and also the MSM -- the electronic In particular -- turning pretty more grossly partisan, there should be no question whatever of repeating, let alone surpassing 303. Not even 282.
Between 200 and 250 should be the most likely envelope for the BJP and between 100 and 150 for the Congress.
However, actual results may very well throw up some (even big?) surprise -- either way.

The Facebook and Instagram owner Meta approved a series of AI-manipulated political adverts during India’s election that spread disinformation and incited religious violence, according to a report shared exclusively with the Guardian.
Facebook approved adverts containing known slurs towards Muslims in India, such as “let’s burn this vermin” and “Hindu blood is spilling, these invaders must be burned”, as well as Hindu supremacist language and disinformation about political leaders. Another approved advert called for the execution of an opposition leader they falsely claimed wanted to “erase Hindus from India”, next to a picture of a Pakistan flag.
https://thewire.in/tech/meta-approved-ai-manipulated-political-ads-during-indias-election-report Fourteen out of 22 submitted adverts were approved, violating the company’s policies on hate speech and misinformation. Under Meta’s policies, political adverts have to go through a specific authorisation process before approval but only three of the submissions were rejected on this basis, according to the Guardian... Ekō found that each ad was accompanied by a manipulated image created with widely used AI image tools Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and Dall-e. Researchers were able to easily generate images showing a person burning an electronic voting machine, drone footage of immigrants crowding India’s border crossing, as well as notable Hindu and Muslim places of worship on fire.
Meta has faced accusations of inadequately curbing the dissemination of Islamophobic hate speech, incitement to violence, and anti-Muslim conspiracy theories on its platforms in India. In certain instances, such posts have resulted in real-life incidents of riots and lynchings.
Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, characterised India's election as "a massive, massive test for us" and highlighted the extensive preparation the company had undertaken in India over several months. The company stated that it had broadened its network of local and third-party fact-checkers across all platforms and was operating in 20 Indian languages.

Indian Electoral Politics: Shifting Sands
Seven decades down the line the electoral scene has changed for the worse and is currently dominated by emotive issues. The foundation of derailing the ‘this worldly’ issues was the Ram Temple movement. This movement became stronger after the implementation of Mandal Commission report. Since then the domination of emotive, identity issues is on the rise. This is reflected by the fact that in 2019, no party dared to utter the word secularism, as claimed by the winner of 2019 elections, Mr. Narendra Modi himself. He presented it as a trophy for the efforts of RSS-BJP’s political success.
https://countercurrents.org/2022/11/indian-electoral-politics-shifting-sands/
It is in this track that any issue can be given a religious turn as we witnessed its peak in the coining of phrase ‘Corona Jihad’. This showed how electoral politics can be reduced merely to game of identity issues. BJP has mastered this art over a period of last few decades. The media, which is prostrating to BJP ideology, is putting its best efforts to magnify the doings of communal stream.
Not to be left behind, Arvind Kejrival is trying to compete which these divisive efforts revolving around identity issues, in his own unique smart ways. The AAP, which in a way, is an alternate model of communal politics; is playing its Hindutva/communal card with shrewdness. Kajriwal party is also an example of blind subservience to the dictator by the other leaders of that party. As Kejriwal demanded this; all his cronies, stated saying the same. The peak of this was Atishi Marlena, who stated that this demand of Laxmi-Ganesh is not merely Kejriwal demand, it is the aspiration of 130 crore Indians! Most of the dictatorial tendencies believe they are speaking for the whole country. This is a duplicate of what Narendra Modi, when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat, used to say that he is talking on behalf of Five Crore Gujratis. India needs a party which can accommodate all sections of society with equality and dignity, apart from welfare; it also promotes employment and proactively deals with marginalized sections of society. We need a party where religion is not mixed with politics. For many, AAP began with a big promise for a better politics, but its reality is there for all to see with its trajectory leading to demanding Laxmi and Ganesh on currency notes and dumping of Jan Lokpal in the dustbin of Hisotry!
