How BJP ‘won’ in Surat: Unravelling 24 hours of peculiarities https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBSrgk-bvFU Apr 27, 2024 In a series of peculiar events, the BJP’s Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed from Gujarat’s Surat Lok Sabha constituency on April 21. The declaration came days before polling even began for the elections, as Congress candidate Nilesh Kumbhani’s nomination was cancelled and eight other independent candidates “withdrew”.
Four affidavits signed by Kumbhani’s relative, a BJP lawyer, and allegations of forgery were the centre of the nomination cancellation. In the aftermath, Kumbhani went incommunicado and sparked allegations of a “collusion”.
But what really happened in Surat? Newslaundry pieced together the peculiar events that led to the BJP candidate’s victory
Fact-checking Modi’s speech, Godi media’s Modi bhakti at Surya Tilak ceremony https://youtu.be/bnF4Y43Lr5E?t=73 newslaundry 27-04 2024 Abhinandan is on hosting duties this week, with Manisha on the ground bringing you Another Election Show from states going to vote.
This week, we saw an outburst from a CNBC reporter which reminds us of what can happen when someone is under too much pressure. Also under pressure was the PM, this time for votes right before the second phase of elections. He was seen and heard making a hate speech against Muslims. We have someone very special to fact-check him. Meanwhile, the mainstream media was busy questioning the opposition and fawning over the PM as he watched the Surya Tilak ceremony of the Ram idol.
The opposition in Tripura has demanded fresh polling in the West Tripura parliamentary constituency and the Ramnagar assembly constituency, on the allegations that the voter turnout in certain polling stations, based on “official” data, showed more than 100%.
According to CPI (M) Tripura secretary, Jitendra Chaudhary, data sourced from the office of the returning officer showed that turnouts in part 44 of the Majlishpur segment stood at 105.30%, 100.15% in part 25 of the Khayerpur segment, 98.80% in part of 44 of the Khayerpur segment, and 109.09 % in part 38 of the Mohanpur segment.
“The above records unequivocally vindicate that, the election to West Tripura Parliamentary Constituency and the by-election to Ramnagar assembly constituency, which is a part of the same parliamentary constituency, were not held in a free, fair and normal manner. Such mismatched polling percentage may happen only when the booths are captured and completely rigged in an organized manner,” Chaudhary wrote to chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Monday, according to the Indian Express.

This comes after three days during which the poll body’s inaction over Modi’s April 21 speech at Banswara in Rajasthan has been severely criticised. A spokesperson, after repeated queries from reporters had said “we decline comment” on Modi’s speech on April 22.
The EC invoked Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act that pertains to star campaigners and has asked the respective party presidents to submit their reports by 11 am on April 29.

BJP ignores EC notice, JP Nadda echoes PM Modi's remark, says ‘Congress plots to transfer SC-ST rights to Muslims’
BJP president JP Nadda repeated PM's comments about alleged Congress line of thinking that Muslims should have priority in resources. This is despite the Election Commission's notice to the party over PM Modi's comments.
Nadda alleged that the main opposition party, the Congress, plans to take away the rights of lower-caste groups (SC, ST, and OBC) and give them to Muslims.
In a post on X in Hindi, Nadda said, “The hidden agenda of the Congress and INDI alliance is to snatch the rights of SC, ST and OBC and give it to Muslims. Congress says that Muslims have the first right on the country's resources, whereas Prime Minister Modi says that the poor have the first right on the resources. Congress hates SC, ST and OBC and appeasement is clearly visible in their manifesto too."
