Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi files nomination from Varanasi
14 May 2024, https://www.livemint.com/news/india/lok-sabha-elections-2024-prime-minister-narendra-modi-files-nomination-papers-from-varanasi-seat-11715660831571.html Modi will contest against Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajai Rai and Bahujan Samajwadi Party's (BSP) Athar Ali Lari. Comedian Shyam Rangeela, known for his videos of mimicking Prime Minister Modi, has also said he will contest the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 against the Prime Minister from the Varanasi seat. Rangeela has, however, not filed his nomination for the seat yet.
Indian comedian running against Modi says he’s not being allowed to file his papers https://www.independent.co.uk/asia/india/shyam-rangeela-modi-indian-election-varanasi-b2544660.html
Shyam Rangeela says he will keep fighting to file his nomination papers despite three days of alleged obstruction by local officials . Mr Rangeela, a stand-up comedian who went viral on social media in 2017 for his impressions of Mr Modi, said he had lined up outside the nomination office on Friday, Monday, and again on Tuesday from morning until afternoon. A native of the western state of Rajasthan, he said he was not even allowed inside the office to wait to file his nomination, let alone submit his paperwork.
The ECI clearly turns a blind eye to egregious violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as is evident from an analysis of data on its website, https://thewire.in/government/unequal-watch-eci-issued-16-notices-over-mcc-violations-bjp-received-just-3
Two and a half months into the 18th Lok Sabha elections, a detailed analysis of data from the website of Election Commission of India (ECI), reveals that the poll body has issued 16 notices and orders for the violations of the Model Code of Conduct and relevant electoral laws since November 13, 2023. Unsurprisingly, the Congress and its leaders have been at the receiving end of such notices/orders with 6 in all, followed by BRS and BJP with 3 each, AAP with 2. One notice each has been issued to the Congress ruled Karnataka Government and Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (for violation of the MCC and stipulated conditions by BRS leader T. Harish Rao by publicising Rythu Bandhu scheme during the MCC period!). Data on previous notices prior to November 20923 is mysteriously missing from its website under “Current Issues” category

On April 29, hours after Akshay Kanti Bam, the Congress’s candidate for Madhya Pradesh’s Indore Lok Sabha constituency, withdrew his nomination and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dharmendra Singh Jhala, a former air force officer, made his way to the collector’s office to collect his election symbol as an independent candidate – only to find that his name had been added to the list of withdrawn candidates, using a fake signature.
