New BJP's New India & Nehru || Midweek Matters 27 || Parakala Prabhakar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf8xtJOs8H4
Parakala talks about the extraordinary act of omission of Jawaharlal Nehru from the Amritmahotsav poster by ICHR and points out it’s pettiness. He contrasts this brazen attempt by the funding body and its minders with the assessment of Nehru by his colleagues, and those the architects of New India claim to draw inspiration from. He says that it is important to see what the ICHR has done in the context of the seemingly sporadic and unconnected incidents of violence against and intimidation of small helpless persons by the Hindutva zealots. For, what the academic funding institution under the new dispensation has attempted to do in the domain of history and what is being done on the streets by its ideological foot soldiers are integral parts of one single political project, called New India.
Understanding the Caveats and Paradoxes of the Pew Survey on Religious Attitudes https://thewire.in/society/pew-research-religion-diversity-attitude-belief-caveat-paradoxes
The survey results are somewhat like the daily horoscope: everyone can have varied takeaways based on their prior beliefs.
First, there is a general problem with perceived ‘meaning’ in surveys, particularly in the case of normative or abstract concepts. It is entirely possible that the meaning of respecting other religions for many is simply ‘tolerating’ the other, while avoiding assimilation.
Second, people are more likely to have extreme views in the realm of abstract. one may have hateful views about another religion in the abstract, but can have trade relations with a person from that very religion. This gap between the stated and revealed preferences can lead to seemingly paradoxical outcomes.
there is more variation within groups While each group may perceive themselves as fundamentally different people from the others, it appears that it is not the case. This calls for a renewed focus on creating an individual-centric discourse. Across all the religious groups, unemployment, corruption and crime are among the top issues:
The group-based voting preferences and discourse is not going anywhere soon, but there is hope for a discourse with the vocabulary of common citizenship. The emancipation of the individual encompasses emancipation of, from, and within groups.

Speak up for these VOICELESS by SIGNING the online petition for their release at WWW.RELEASE7INNOCENTS.COM
Scripted & directed by journalist ANTO AKKARA who has been pursuing TRUTH & JUSTICE for a VOICELESS PEOPLE for a decade. This documentary - visual presentation of the investigative book ‘WHO KILLED SWAMI LAXMANANANDA?’ - was launched on August 23, 2018 in New Delhi on the 10th anniversary of Kandhamal.
https://www.thecitizen.in/index.php/en/NewsDetail/index/2/16984/My-Joy-Has-No-Words-Kandhamal-Accused Gornath Chalanseth, one of the seven innocent Christians languishing in jail for a decade in Kandhamal district of Odisha walked to freedom May 20 on the bail granted by the Supreme Court.
Gornath along with six others: Bhaskar Sunamajhi, Bijay Sanseth, Buddhadev Nayak, Durjo Sunamajhi, Sanatan Badamajhi and mentally challenged Munda Badamajhi had been convicted to life imprisonment by a third judge in 2013.
The shocking conviction came after two judges had been transferred, for the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in Kandhamal on August 23 2008. The murder of the Hindu religious leader in Kandhamal triggered unprecedented violence that lasted four months and claimed nearly 100 lives and rendered more than 56,000 homeless.
Despite being excited over his freedom from captivity of a decade, Gornath told journalist author Anto Akkara who was there to witness the occasion with a twinge of sadness: “I am happy with my freedom but there are other innocents in jail. Six of Kandhamal’s innocents are also in jail.”

Kandhamal survivors mourn death of “innocent’s” wife By: Purushottam Nayak On: August 20, 2021 Gumili, wife of Durjo Sunamajhi, one of the seven people accused of murdering a Hindu ascetic, died August 19 in a hospital in Berhampur where she was admitted with fever two days ago. She was 50.
Swami Laxmananand Saraswati was shot dead on August 23, 2008, as Hindu celebrated Janmashtami, the birthday of their Lord Krishna. It triggered unprecedented violence against Christians that lasted for several months.
Anto Akkara, a veteran journalist who campaigns for justice of “the seven innocents,” expressed sadness that Gumili could not live to see the final verdict that he said would acquit her husband and other six “innocents.”
According to Akkara, Durjo’s case is unique because he was on a train journey to Kerala with his nephew and others for a job when the Hindu ascetic was killed.
Kandhamal’s long wait for ‘justice’ https://www.nationalheraldindia.com/india/kandhamals-long-wait-for-justice
The Supreme Court ordered review of 315 cases of communal violence that were filed. The cases are still to be reopened after four years of the ruling
For 56,000 and more Christians of Kandhamal, adivasis and Dalits, there is little solace in the news that a court in late July finally sentenced 30 of the accused to two-year prison terms for their role in the communal violence in 2008. And, oh, the guilty were fined Rs 1,000 each in what newspapers called the “2008 riots” case.
On August 2, 2016, the Supreme Court bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Uday Lalit ruled that the quantum and scope for compensation was not satisfactory. They also found it disturbing that offenders were not booked by the police. The Supreme Court ordered review of 315 cases of communal violence that were filed. The cases are still to be reopened after four years of the Supreme Court ruling, which indeed had not set any deadline.
Of special importance is the demand to register cases against state and non-state actors. The role of many leaders of the Sangh Parivar had been documented. The complicity of the police and civil administration was obscenely obvious for all to see.
A "Yes Or No" Question For Modi On Partition https://www.ndtv.com/opinion/a-yes-or-no-question-for-modi-on-partition-by-rajmohan-gandhi-2512950 - by Rajmohan Gandhi August 18, 2021
I ask: "Calling for a 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', you tweeted, 'Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence.' My question is, are displaced or killed Muslims included in our sisters and brothers?"
And any 'remembrance' that excludes horrors faced by the 'other' side would not only sound hollow, it would trigger fresh rage. On the other hand, a remembrance that takes an honest and complete look at the entirety of the violence of 1946-47 can move us forward. It could even become a step towards reconciliation within India and between the nations of South Asia. Truth and reconciliation go together.
A more direct opinion come from Prakala Prabhakar: Modi Vs Modi 2014-2021 || Midweek Matters 25 || https://youtu.be/2dP-g_AQ7Tw Dr Parakala looks back at all the seven speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2014 until last year, and puts this year's speech against the back drop of his utterances in those. And tries to understand from them the shift that has taken place between 2014 and 2021 in the Modi persona and his political and governance discourse.
Sab ka Prayaas was urged. Is there a subliminal messaging in remember the partition remembrance day?
Why is Modi telling us to remember something we haven't been allowed to forget? https://www.rediff.com/news/column/why-is-modi-telling-us-to-remember-partition/20210817.htm By JYOTI PUNWANI August 17, 2021
Interestingly, August 14 is the day the RSS observes as Akhand Bharat Sankalp Divas.
Its chief Mohan Bhagwat explained his vision of Akhand Bharat in February this year: A country which would include not just India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, but also Afghanistan, all 'unite(d) through Sanatan dharma, which is humanity's dharma and of the entire world and today it is called Hindu dharma.'
Basically, this is a vision that wipes out Islam from the sub-continent
Remember the horrors of Partition, but also draw the right lessons from them https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/partition-horrors-remembrance-day-pm-modi-7463480/
Harsh Mander writes: We must remember always what the politics of religious hate does to a people. "when I decided to leave behind my career in the IAS in protest against the Gujarat communal massacre of 2002, to fight for justice and healing with the survivors, many relatives of my extended family were furious, and cancelled me from their lives. One of them said to me loudly during a family wedding, “We are ashamed of you. After all we suffered during Partition, you have crossed to the wrong side”. I replied, “After all our families suffered in Partition, who more than us can understand the suffering of victims of the same hate violence? It is, even more, our duty to stand resolutely with them, against the perpetrators of hate. "
Indians must never forget the torment and horrors of Partition. We must remember so that we never allow hate to partition not just our land, but even more fundamentally, our hearts. We must remember always what the politics of religious hate does to a people.
