Political parties made a whole bunch of promises to street vendors ahead of the Lok Sabha election in the national capital on May 25. What those who have stalls on the roads really want is social security, dignity to work, and a decent livelihood to survive, finds Satvika Mahajan The Street vendors Act 2014 was meant to protect the rights of urban street vendors. All street vendors were supposed to be provided licences.. Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections leading national parties made poll promises..
The Urban Development Ministry has the power to make decisions for street vendors. There needs to be a push to decentralise decision making with training and capacity buildingin the ULBs and TVCs.

Why has Modi gov given one month extension to army chief, Gen Manoj Pande when there is NO crisis that requires him to remain in office?
It shows:
1. Gov arbitrariness in military appointment
2. Gov did the same with CDS Anil Chauhan- who was brought back from retirement, given higher rank of 4 star & made CDS
These actions shows dangerous
preference given to senior officers who are ideologically aligned with the ruling political party. Pande ji has demonstrated this by taking military thinking to medieval statecraft- instead of focusing it on modern warfare.
If Modi gov gets another term in office, we shall have military leadership with no intellectual desire to learn what it should.
The art of generalship will be lost for ever!

The misuse of draconian laws for political gain https://www.newindianexpress.com/opinions/2024/May/26/the-misuse-of-draconian-laws-for-political-gain Kapil Sibal 27 May 2024,
The PMLA is perhaps the most draconian law in the history of India. Preventive detention laws, which were often used at one time, still provided for procedural safeguards that are absent in this legislation.
monies generated from the predicate offence are proceeds of crime and using those proceeds by projecting them as untainted money is ‘money laundering’. By virtue of the explanation added to the definition of money laundering through the Finance Act, 2019, it in effect alters the meaning of money laundering. .The added explanation obliterates the distinction between proceeds of crime and money laundering. Therefore, under the law as it stands today, the proceeds of crime and money laundering allow the ED to enter any state to investigate the offence... Even though the predicate offence has not resulted in a chargesheet and is at the initial stage of investigation, the ED merrily starts arresting persons. Once arrested, it is impossible for the accused to secure bail because of the stringent legal provisions wherein the court has to come to the conclusion that the accused is not guilty of the offence.

SPRING/SUMMER 2020 • CATO JOURNAL By Thomas A. Hemphill
many governments around the world are equipping themselves with advisory boards to help with the process of developing AI regulations. Most promising is the EU’s High‐Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence. Also, agreements, rules, and standards are beginning to emerge for user privacy, data exchange, and avoiding racial bias (the EU’s GDPR legislation, for example). But, at present, there are no implementable recommendations that can be made to governments or other organizations on maintaining control over AI systems, primarily because the terms “safe and controllable” (reflecting the validity of the “provable beneficial” approach) do not have precise meanings...
the potential positive uses for AI in society (such as advancements in scientific research) and the potential for misusing AI (such as automated extortion). Ignoring the potential for super intelligent AI technology to have catastrophic consequences for humanity would be highly risky. Indeed, Russell cautions that silence over discussing these potentially catastrophic consequences will only ensure a greater probability of this endgame occurring...his approach as one of “responsible innovation,” which requires all relevant stakeholders in the innovation system to embrace a sense of individual and collective responsibility.

Towards Tax Justice and Wealth Redistribution in India https://www.theindiaforum.in/economy/towards-tax-justice-and-wealth-redistribution-india Inequality levels have reached historical highs under the Billionaire Raj. These extreme inequalities and their close links with social injustices can no longer be ignored. A comprehensive wealth tax package would be an important step towards a more equitable growth path for India.

‘Ayega to Modi hi? But how? https://mainstreamweekly.net/article14707.html Faraz Ahmad Mainstream, VOL 62 No 21, May 25, 2024.. the Election Commission has abandoned several past practises this time. One, stretching the polling to seven phases and nearly a month and a half. Two, abandoning the practice of holding a press conference after each phase to give out facts, figures and other related information to the media and thereby sharing all relevant information with the voters at large. We need not repeat here the EC reluctance to act strictly against patently communal and divisive speeches by the Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country in this Election campaign, day in and day out...It seems now that Modi and his drum beaters’ confidence in ‘ayega to Modi hi’, derives from this suspected manipulation of the voting machines.
Will 2024 Results Spell A Change or Not? | Nilofar Suhrawardy Statistically, the chances of Modi and his party being supported by as many votes as earlier are hardly strong. This may also be stated as the vote-bank favouring BJP appears to be weaker in comparison to 2014 and 2019. However, prospects of BJP not faring as well as it did earlier and/or the number of seats it wins/loses cannot be delinked from a few other factors. It needs to be considered, in whose favour do votes choosing not to support BJP turn to? Division in anti-BJP votes may still help the BJP win. If voters’ decision is primarily decided by their anti-BJP attitude, then a lot is likely to be dependent on who they vote for, whether there is unity/division in this decision of theirs or not.. the 2024 elections may be viewed as a display of democratic strategy being exercised strongly and silently by voters to ensure the command of their electoral prowess in ensuring success/defeat of the party in power. The key question rests on how many votes are specifically cast for Modi or against him, in other words, on whether voters act decisively regarding a change at the centre or not?
