Despite incessant attacks and two arrests that practically put him out of action, Arvind Kejriwal has stumped the Bharatiya Janata Party once again. By resigning from his position as Delhi chief minister immediately after being granted bail with conditions that placed restrictions on his administrative powers, the Aam Aadmi Party chief has put his astute political reflexes on full display. https://thewire.in/politics/arvind-kejriwal-narendra-modi-bjp-atishi
The BJP’s campaign in Kejriwal’s absence had veered around two crucial allegations against the AAP government. One, that the it had been the most corrupt of all governments of Delhi, an accusation that it could not substantiate beyond citing the arrest of its senior leaders by Union government-controlled investigative agencies, whose conduct and probes are under the scanner for their alleged political partisanship. Two, the BJP spokespersons made it a point to hammer the point that Kejriwal was making space for his wife Sunita Kejriwal to take over his role in the party.
By appointing Atishi, a leader who has earned her position as a natural successor, Kejriwal has not only reinforced his original USP as an honest and self-sacrificing Gandhian but has also energised Delhi’s lacklustre political mood by signalling that AAP remained a party which rewards political conviction and merit. He timed his resignation skilfully too, as any such decision at an earlier stage when he was in prison could have emboldened the BJP in its aggressive campaign against the AAP and stripped him of the moral high ground that he has attained now.
In one strategic move, Kejriwal has reclaimed the limelight once again. The BJP under Narendra Modi has successfully drawn an effective political narrative against the Congress, but has often been found wanting to tackle Kejriwal and the AAP’s quick retorts and repartee. Shorn of its effectiveness against AAP, it finally had to marshal government agencies to force the party into submission.

Indian military export to Israel — aiding genocide https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/lead/indian-military-export-to-israel-aiding-genocide/article68648945.ece September 17, 2024 The top court’s dismissal of a petition on the subject highlights the limits of judicial review over executive decisions in matters of foreign policy, especially in violations of humanitarian law
The petition, in Ashok Kumar Sharma and Others vs Union of India, had sought the suspension of existing licences and the withholding of further licences by the government to public sector and private companies, for exporting military equipment to Israel during the ongoing war. While the Court made it clear that it was not ruling on the merits of the case, The dismissal raises important questions about the limits of judicial review over executive decisions in matters of foreign policy and especially where there are grave violations of international humanitarian law.
Supreme Court Dismisses Plea To Stop India's Military Exports To Israel Amidst Gaza Conflict https://www.livelaw.in/top-stories/supreme-court-dismisses-plea-to-stop-indias-military-exports-to-isreal-amidst-gaza-conflict-269008 9 Sept 2024 Anmol Kaur Bawa
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, for the petitioners, submitted that if the national policy is against the Constitution and the law, then the Court can interfere. Referring to the judgments of the International Court of Justice, Bhushan said that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and India cannot allow exports which are used for genocide. That would amount to abetting genocide and the violation of the Genocide Convention, which has been ratified by India.
Bhushan argued that the Genocide Convention can be read into our municipal law and therefore, any policy, which is contravening the international treaty, has to be stopped by the Court.
https://sabrangindia.in/india-tops-online-anti-muslim-hate-posts-3rd-largest-spike-islamophobic-tweets-2022-report/ The United Nations (UN) marked the first-ever International Day to Combat Islamophobia with a special event on March 15, where speakers upheld the need for concrete action in the face of rising hatred, discrimination and violence against Muslims.
The report also observed the most common themes in Islamophobic tweets, the most prevalent of which were: The association of Islam with terrorism and the depiction of Muslim men as perpetrators of sexual violence
https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/majority-anti-muslim-twitter-posts-come-us-uk-india Nearly 86 percent of anti-Muslim posts on social media come from the US, the UK and India, a report by the Australian-based Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) has found.
Over a two-year period, between 28 August 2019 and 27 August 2021, India saw the highest figure, with 871,379 Islamophobic tweets, followed by the US with 289,248, and the UK, with 196,376.
The Citizens' Report on 2020 Delhi Riots is an Indictment of the Country: Harsh Mander Oct 14, 2022 Harsh Mander added: “The report underlines how dark a moment this is in India’s journey as a republic, how every institution is crumbling and with what consequences.”
The interview first discusses alleged complicity of the Delhi Police. How they failed to act for three days even though they had received at least six internal alerts from the Special Branch. How the Committee has found a mass of information indicating police failures and police complicity. How the behavior of the police at Jamia Millia Islamia was nothing short of brutality.
Most importantly, the interview discusses the report’s findings that show that the charge of conspiracy to create terror is fabricated and prosecution under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act is “a perversion of the law”. The interview also discusses the report’s findings that the charge of conspiracy “is based on unexplained belated statements which are inherently unreliable in law.”

‘Need to speak for ourselves’: Meet the women keeping Kolkata protests alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRGQYYXNuoA newslaundry Sep 14, 2024
What started as a protest by doctors against the Kolkata rape-murder has branched out into a movement featuring women from different socio-economic backgrounds coming out on the streets in West Bengal to reclaim public spaces and demand a safer environment.
Among the faces of the protests in Kolkata are Rimjhim Sen, an independent researcher on gender issues, and Sneha, a junior doctor at a government hospital.
Sneha had never participated in a demonstration but says that she had to speak up against “mob attacks”. Junior doctors this week defied the Supreme Court’s orders to return to work by Tuesday evening. “We have made up our mind that we can not be defensive. We have to learn to speak for ourselves.”
Rimjhim, on the other hand, had been involved in protests before but she had no idea that her social media post to “reclaim the night” – urging women to come out on the streets a day before independence day – would go viral. The significance of that protest was clear in the phone calls Rimjhim received from women from rural areas, asking her if they could show up for the demonstration for only two hours due to the absence of safe public transport late at night.
On the night of August 14, women protested at about 300 places across the state, and the ‘reclaim the night’ protests have refused to die down since then. “Women came out to protest to make a statement that the night is not reserved for one gender and every gender has the right to access it.
After the (Kolkata rape-murder) incident, a fire had been lit. My post was probably a small spark.”
But what have been the protesters’ demands? Is it a people’s movement or a political conspiracy against the Mamata Banerjee government? And how has the official response been so far?
