community-based forest governance from resistance to proposals for sustainable use https://www.foei.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/community-based-forest-governance.pdf Community-based forest governance:
• Refers to the regulations and practices used by many communities for the conservation and sustainable use of the forests with which they coexist.
• This type of governance is collective-communal, and by tradition identifies with the protection of the forests with regard to their industrial and commercial use.
• It also identifies itself with traditional knowledge as an alternative to the classic “forest science” . The latter approach is based on simplified models, assumes that destruction is “reversible,” and has facilitated multiple cases of forest devastation as well as severe social injustic
Throughout India’s 60 years of independence, approximately 30 million Adivasis have been officially displaced from their natural territory, for
“development” projects including tourism, logging concessions, monoculture plantations, mining, reservoirs and roads. Various interests have attempted to claim that the Adivasi settlements are harmful and degrade tropical forests. But this discourse has merely been used to justify the exclusion of many communities and has facilitated commercial harvesting of India’s forests. The process has often begun with the creation of reserves, national parks and wildlife “sanctuaries”; and continued with the construction of roads to provide access for hotel infrastructure, turning these zones into tourist areas
with greater resultant impacts than those generated by the communities originally inhabiting them

https://vikalpsangam.org/article/statement-condemning-detention-of-ladakhi-padyatris-marchers-at-singhu-border/ We, over 85 organisations and movements across India, condemn the detention of nearly 200 peaceful climate marchers from Ladakh to Delhi who are raising valid demands of climate justice and 6th schedule status for Ladakh to the Government of India. This is doubly shocking given that some of these steps were promised to them during the elections in 2019, like the granting of Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh, and secure jobs for local youth.

Modi's 'One Nation, One Election' Puts Uniformity Above Constitution, May Pave Way for Hindu Rashtra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U60CjeLbhz4 The Wire Oct 1, 2024 Suhas Palshikar One nation one election undermines the belief our constitution has a basic structure and that could lead to the introduction of Hindutva: Chief Editor, Studies in Indian Politics, shift the debate about one nation one election away from its impact on our democracy, to the impact the constitutional amendments it requires. These are far more important and dangerous, “It delegitimizes the idea that there is anything fundamental or sacrosanct about the constitution … this government does not care if key aspects of the Constitution have to be changed in a fashion that hurts its very identity.” Prof. Suhas Palshikar fears that this process could “open the doors” to further changes in the constitution.
Impact on democracy; “a death blow to the parliamentary system”, “a major attack in the arena of states’ autonomy” and on “the promise of representation”.
one nation one election will “prioritize neatness, uniformity and sameness” over the heterogeneous multi-faceted character of the country and, therefore, flatten what he calls India’s asymmetry. He points out that India is not one nation one religion, one nation one culture, one nation one language. Therefore, one nation one election would “transform the democratic logic (of our constitution) into a logic of ‘oneness’.”

How the Attack on Rahul Gandhi For His US Remarks Exposes BJP's Own Dubious Relationship with Sikhs https://thewire.in/politics/how-the-attack-on-rahul-gandhi-for-his-us-remarks-exposes-bjps-own-dubious-relationship-with-sikhs/ Paramjeet Singh and Rajarshee Narayan Chowdhury 28/Sep/2024 Senior BJP leaders such as Hardeep Singh Puri (who is himself Sikh) pulled-no-punches, in a column for the Indian Express, Puri wrote: “The only time Sikhs have felt insecure and faced an existential threat in India was in the early 1980s.”
BJP’s national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, referred to Rahul Gandhi’s comments as supposed evidence of the latter having gone from making “childish comments” to “dangerous and mischievous activities”. ..Congress leader Pawan Khera, in responding to the BJP leaders’ attacks on Gandhi, pointed to how the saffron party often construes any criticism of its policies as attacks on India. Khera further reminded how the Prime Minister himself was not above-often in pejorative terms-referencing people’s clothing, most recently, the anti-hijab movement of the BJP, against the school-going girls of Karnataka, fanning communal flames in educational institutions; with members of the judiciary openly attending events by organisations such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
