India is, not just a strategic partner in the fight against China. It is also a very attractive business partner. Hence, "democratic" sensibilities are quite unlikely to come into play as far as the state powers are concerned.

That, of course, doesn't mean that one shouldn't address public opinion in these countries.

On Tuesday, Mr. Modi invited western companies to use the opportunities of India’s expanding civil aviation market. On the first D, western
governments murmur occasional protests, but they cannot hide their excitement when it comes to the second D. The Air India order was Boeing’s
third largest sale of all time, in dollar value, and it is second of all time in quantity.

“This purchase will support over 1 million American jobs across 44 states, and many will not require a four-year college degree,” U.S. President Joe Biden said, according to a White House release.“ This announcement also reflects the strength of the U.S.-India economic partnership. Together with Prime Minister Modi, I look forward to deepening our partnership even further as we continue to confront shared global challenges.” According to Mr. Sunak, the aircraft order will create “better-paid jobs and new opportunities in manufacturing hubs from Derby to Wales,” which will help the U.K. to “grow the economy and support our agenda to level up”. Mr. Macron was described by Mr. Modi as a friend, and both hailed the “strategic partnership” between the two countries. The lure of of the Indian market, powered by its demography, seems stronger than that of the second D — Democracy.

Most Indians are against interfaith unions even though they see India as a religiously tolerant country, a Pew research had found in 2021. The survey said that 67 percent of Hindus and 80 percent of Muslims feel it’s important to stop women from their communities from such marriages.

Such couples are subjected to scrutiny from families, societies, as well as the government, with several states passing “#lovejihad" laws. Further, the special marriage act – under which couples can get married without having to convert their religion – also has a loophole that has been weaponised by extremist groups.

However, earlier this week, interfaith and intercaste couples came together to celebrate and assert their right to love and choose a partner, at an event organised by Dhanak. It is a non-profit support group that gives financial and legal aid to such couples.

We spoke to some of them to try to understand their struggles and how the new laws impact them. They told us about FIRs by families and attacks by #Hindutva activists.

The urban areas have seen a few national missions being implemented to improve the state of infrastructure as well as bring in conditionalities with funds for reforms to privatise delivery of services and implementation of projects by the ULBs. Private sector participation through PPPs and private investments in urban projects have been advocated in urban projects for the past several years including by institutions like the World Bank.

.. Risk allocation between public and private agencies has been a contentious issue in PPP projects since private sector wishes the public sector to take on majority of risks like investments, tariffs, social and environmental impacts, guarantees, etc leaving it free to earn risk free profits.

...The argument about the potential to increase user charges and other taxes to improve the economic base and creditworthiness of the city corporations and hence raise the private financing for infrastructure projects. However, this crucially misses the very important point about the prevailing economic conditions of the larger sections of the population, especially in the post covid years.

... implementation of private projects and reforms in the Indian context in urban areas have not been a success over a period of the past couple of decades. The previous missions like Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT), Smart Cities Mission and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) have attempted to implement these measures without much success. These missions had mandates to implement privatised PPP projects with reforms in hundreds of large and medium cities included in these missions. The lack of success of these missions shows that there needs to be a change in the national policies to implement urban projects and their financing, however it seems that the lessons from the past experiences have not been learnt.

While authorities at IIT Bombay have said there was no discrimination on the campus, Darshan Solanki's family claimed he was ostracised by friends.

BBC was found to have been recruiting long-term employees as contractual workers to avoid income taxes

David Smith, the then BBC’s head of employee tax, had admitted that 25,000 contracts covering roughly 1500 staff had been granted on an off-book, freelancing basis, but he argued that the company abided by the laws. He acknowledged, however, that the BBC was able to reduce its liability in cases where the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority, HMRC determined that the person involved was not a true freelancer due to the usage of so-called service companies, particularly by on-air talent.

BBC had accepted, that 148 of its 467 presenters were employed through personal service companies, despite them often being employed long-term. Their contracts shared characteristics with typical pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) contracts.
