Climate change: Rising sea levels ring alarm bells for Mumbai August 3, 2023 https://mumbai.citizenmatters.in/mumbai-coastal-cities-rising-sea-levels-floods-53991 By 2070, Mumbai is projected to be home to over 11 million people in areas susceptible to rising sea levels and heightened flooding. That is almost four times more than current exposed population of 2.7 million. These vulnerable residents will face the risks to their homes, livelihoods and their basic safety.
Journalist Pamela Cheema, AGNI (Action for Good Governance and Networking in India) Coordinator and Powai ALM, criticises the government’s approval of forest exploitation. Her organisation, AGNI, had taken a stand against the coastal road project, as she believes it will inevitably be submerged due to rising sea levels. “Despite the project’s high cost, we advocate for its termination, considering it detrimental to the city’s well-being. Our plea calls for prioritising the protection of these critical areas to safeguard Mumbai from the impacts of climate change,” she says..
Rather than pursuing short-term construction and increasing the FSI, the city must invest in long-term solutions that can effectively withstand climate challenges. Sustainable infrastructure that can endure rising sea levels and extreme weather events is crucial for ensuring the safety of Mumbai’s people, say activists.
that seeks to amend forest act Aug 03, 2023 https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/parliament-clears-contentious-bill-that-seeks-to-amend-forest-act-101691002458287.html The Rajya Sabha cleared the contentious Forest Conservation (Amendment) bill 2023 on Wednesday, opening the door for development and exploitation of vast tracts of forest lands that are not recorded as such in government records and potentially endangering sensitive ecosystems in the Northeast that fall under a national security exemption. The forest bill was passed after a debate lasting one hour and 40 minutes without any member from the Opposition that walked out over the violence in Manipur.
And, with the controversial Biological Diversity Amendment bill -- which sparked a row for exempting users of traditional knowledge and Ayush practitioners from sharing benefits with local communities -- that was passed by the Upper House on Tuesday, it marks the beginning of a new era in India’s environmental protection regime.

Dark Side of India's Data Protection Bill | Deshbhakt Takeover Ep3 - ft Anjali Bharadwaj https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_ERWLezCzI Aug 2, 2023
The Data Protection Bill is finally set to be tabled in Parliament. While important for India's Digital Infrastructure - there are serious concerns about the Bill. Besides the issue of Govt. infringing on our right to privacy - it could also be diluting the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005.

With the executive vastly empowered to draft rules and notifications on a range of issues, India might end up with a law that takes away the right to seek personal information

https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/the-problems-with-the-data-protection-bill/article66531928.ece the Bill seeks to dilute the provisions of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which has empowered citizens to access information and hold governments accountable. Experience has shown that if people, especially the poor and marginalised, are to have any hope of obtaining the benefits of welfare programmes, they must have access to relevant, granular information. For instance, the National Food Security Act recognises the need for placing the details of ration card holders and records of ration shops, including sale and stock registers, in the public domain to enable social audits of the public distribution system. In the absence of publicly accessible information, it is impossible for intended beneficiaries to access their rightful entitlement of food grains. This is equally true for delivery of other social security programmes such as old age pensions and scholarships. It is behind the cloak of secrecy that the rights of individuals are most frequently abrogated and corruption thrives. In recognition of this principle, democracies ensure public disclosure of voters’ lists with names, addresses and other details to enable scrutiny and prevent electoral fraud

Manipur Sexual Assault Case In Supreme Court: The top court was hearing the centre's request to transfer the case of two women being paraded naked in strife-torn Manipur to a different state. July 31, 2023
"The government doesn't have the data now to tell you how many such cases have been registered. That shows the state of affairs," senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the two women, said while requesting a Supreme Court-monitored probe.
The court asked the Centre how many of around 6,000 FIRs filed since the violence broke out in Manipur were for crimes against women. The Centre said it did not have a break-up of such cases..
The survivors are traumatised and terrorised. We are not sure whether the survivors will tell the truth to a CBI team. They should have the confidence to tell the truth," Senior Advocate Indira Jaising said, asking for a high-powered committee of women members from civil society, so these survivors could come forward and share the truth.
"Merely entrusting to CBI or SIT would not be enough. We will have to picture a situation where a 19-year-old woman who has lost her family is in a relief camp. We cannot have her going to magistrate. We have to ensure that the process of justice goes to her doorstep. We will constitute a committee of women judges and members of civil society, who will in turn get the assistance of members of civil societies," the court said.
https://www.siasat.com/jailed-sanjiv-bhatts-wife-shweta-determined-take-power-state-1543652/
the official sources reportedly said Mrs. Shweta was spreading “blatant falsehoods and trying to create a false impression about the absence of fair trial in the case”
The case is related to the custodial deaths of Prabhudas Vaishnani, who was among 133 people caught by local Jamnagar police after a communal riot broke out following a bandh call in view of BJP leader L K Advani’s Rath Yatra.
Continuing, Mrs. Shweta revealed how to fast track justice became fast track injustice when Sanjiv Bhatt in about record 18 days time was convicted for a crime he had not committed. Firstly, she said her husband had “neither arrested nor detained anyone as he was not empowered to do so. Secondly, Prabhudas died 18 days after he was detained. He never complained of torture before the magistrate or anybody else.”
She called her husband’s conviction a “miscarriage of justice”, and claimed that he had been “implicated in a fabricated case”. She claimed that the complaint filed against her husband was a “classic case of political vindictiveness”.
“It was not the family of Prabhudas but a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Amrutlal Madjavji Vaishnani, who filed a complaint of custodial torture,” she claimed.
