It is no longer just our leaders we must fear, but a whole section of the population. The banality of evil, the normalisation of evil is now manifest in our streets, in our classrooms, in very many public spaces. The mainstream press, the hundreds of 24-hour news channels have been harnessed to the cause of fascist majoritarianism. India’s Constitution has been effectively set aside. The Indian Penal Code is being rewritten. If the current regime wins a majority in 2024, it is very likely that we will see a new Constitution.

Still, the world’s powers choose to give Modi all the oxygen he needs to destroy the social fabric and burn India down. To me, this is a form of racism. They claim to be democrats, but they are racists. They don’t believe their professed “values” should apply to non-white countries. It’s an old story of course.

Ext: As per Oliver’s method, the average marketing budget of a large enterprise is around 6 per cent of its total revenue. Rebranding exercises, meanwhile, cost up to 10 per cent of the company’s overall marketing budget. For the fiscal year 2022-23,  India's revenue receipts stood at a total of Rs 23.84 lakh crore, including tax and non-tax revenue. Applying Oliver's formula to India (0.006*23.84 lakh crore), the 'rebranding' amount stands at a gargantuan Rs 14,304 crore.

Though some leaders from BJP have said that there’s not going to be any formal change in name, no clarity has been officially given. However, if there’s even the slightest prospect of the matter being taken up in the Special Session of the Parliament to be held from September 18-22, then there is likely to be considerable strain on the national exchequer, as the renaming process would require changes at the hyperlocal and individual levels to the international level.

Comment: A Friend while working for a Goan newspaper, has shown, based on the various tenders just before CHOGM, that most of the infrastructure and beautification expenses were picked up under various development and infrastructure budgets and perhaps at least partly represented a shift from normal development and maintenance budgets. A example would be that lighting of the streets and institutions  in Mumbai were done during the republic day celebrations and the power bills since then paid to the recently privatised owners of the power distribution companies, whereas earlier at least the surpluses under BEST would go for provide public transport.
