Walmart Foundation invests $39 million in farmer livelihood enhancement programme in India https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/walmart-foundation-invests-39-million-in-farmer-livelihood-enhancement-program-in-india/article67420729.ece October 14, 2023
Walmart Foundation said that, since 2018, through its market access programme it has invested over $39 million in India to reach 500 Farmer Producer Organizations/Farmer Producer Groups targeting 8,00,000 farmers, of which more than half are women..
NGOs like PRADAN, ACCESS, Mercy Corps and Srijan are working with the Walmart Foundation’s Market Access Program to provide on-ground impact.
Email comment by A R Vasavi: This is a matter of concern. Why should Indian NGOs that are supposedly working for farmers' and India's agrarian interests co-opt to become
conduits for international Agri-business. Details of such transactions
should be highlighted. Others should exercise caution.
https://walmart.org/news/2022/walmart-foundation-announces-new-grant-to-pradan-to-support-the-growth-and-development-of-women-led-fpos PROWFIT, that stands for the 'prowess of organized resources & women-farmers for transforming FPOs into independent institutions', intends to support 60 women-led Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) over a period of 30 months.
PROWFIT builds off PRADAN’s previous project 'LEAP' (Livelihoods Enhancement through market Access and Women Empowerment). LEAP, a two-year project, was supported by $1.9 million grant from the Walmart Foundation. This project impacted the livelihoods of 45,000 smallholder women farmers across Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. The program focused on creating opportunities for women smallholder farmers (SHFs) to build capabilities to sustainably double their income over a four-year period, with a goal to take them irreversibly above the poverty line by establishing sustainable farm businesses.

Israelis have just witnessed the greatest one-day loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust. For Palestinians, especially in Gaza, where Israel has now ordered more than one million people in the north to leave their homes... Never have the prospects for justice and peace looked more remote. Yet the work of moral rebuilding must begin. In Israel-Palestine and around the world, pockets of Palestinians and Jews, aided by people of conscience of all backgrounds, must slowly construct networks of trust based on the simple principle that the lives of both Palestinians and Jews are precious and inextricably intertwined.

Solutions, you ask? I can’t say I have any. If you came here for that, I’m sorry. The two-state solution looks dead to me. A three-state solution makes some sense but feels out of the view of all the people who matter and could make it happen. I wish a one-state solution felt realistic — a world of Israelis and Arabs and Muslims and Jews living side by side with equal rights, fully integrated and defused of their hate, is a version of Israel that I would adore. But it seems less and less realistic with every new act of violence.
Am I pro-Israel or pro-Palestine? I have no idea...
I'm pro-freedom and pro-peace and pro- all the things we never see in this conflict anymore.
Whatever this is, I want none of it.
How Israel Was Created https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6foH3Zc82ZQ May 15, 2023
This year, Israel is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding in 1948. But how exactly was that country born on land that was already called Palestine?
Is Israel Guilty Of Apartheid Against Palestinians? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MknerYjob0w For many years, Palestinians have accused Israel of practicing apartheid: An official policy of treating the people under its rule differently depending on their ethnicity. Although it’s most famously associated with the white supremacist regime that used to rule South Africa, apartheid is actually a crime with specific conditions. In this explainer, we look at what those conditions are and whether they truly apply to Israel or not.
How Israel Made Gaza The World’s Biggest Prison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWG7JB9saE4
Often described as the world’s biggest prison, most of the world only pays attention to Gaza when its firing rockets at Israel. It’s a tiny territory with no control of its own borders or airspace. Most of its residents are refugees from just across the boundary with Israel who have almost no chance of ever leaving. Outside visitors are rare. Escape – even during Israeli bombings – is impossible. Most children have never known a full day of electricity. And these conditions aren’t the result of some natural disaster – they’re deliberate policy decisions.

Israeli airstrikes killed over 200 people and destroyed more than 2,800 homes. Despite this, the Biden administration approved a $735 million weapons sale to Israel. Each year, the U.S. gives Israel $3.8 billion in military aid. In this short explainer, we look at how U.S tax dollars help fund Israel’s attacks on Palestinians.

Israeli Journalist Gideon Levy: Israel Should Lift Siege & Call Off Plan for Ground Invasion of Gaza https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5t2JLpB7SY
Democracy Now! Oct 11, 2023 Israeli journalist and author Gideon Levy, whose recent column for Haaretz is headlined "Israel Can't Imprison Two Million Gazans Without Paying a Cruel Price." Levy discusses the reaction within Israeli society toward Hamas's unexpected attack and condemns the Netanyahu government for only mobilizing for further warfare rather than providing effective assistance to victims. "Nobody is leading Israel," declares Levy, who also calls for Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza and accept that its campaign of eradicating Hamas is "impossible." After decades of Palestinian subjugation under Israeli rule, "you can kill the current top people of Hamas, but you will not kill the ideology of Hamas," says Levy.

The Hole in India’s Definition of Terrorism https://thediplomat.com/2023/10/the-hole-in-indias-definition-of-terrorism/ Rashad Khan
October 12, 2023 Hindutva violence is not included in India’s official conception of terrorism, but rather enjoys the blessing of the state.
The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project, showed that from January 2016 to October 2022, South Asia recorded almost 16,270 cases of anti-civilian violence, of which, 62.4 percent of cases happened in India. A closer look at the data shows that it is specifically violence perpetrated by Hindutva militant organizations that has consistently been on the rise.
The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the law that is in effect in India to combat terrorism, defines a terrorist act as “any act with intent to threaten or likely to threaten the unity, integrity, security, [economic security,] or sovereignty of India or with intent to strike terror or likely to strike terror in the people or any section of the people in India or in any foreign country.”
The list of organizations designated as terrorist organizations as per the India’s Ministry of Home Affairs does not include a single organization that aligns with the Hindutva ideology. Going by the definition of a terrorist act as per the UAPA, many of the Hindu nationalist organizations must be included in the list due to the amount of terror and damage they perpetuate.
The BJP government has said on record in the Rajya Sabha that no separate data is maintained by the National Crime Records Bureau on the people killed or injured by Hindutva vigilante groups. This shows the intrinsic bias the government has toward spreaders of saffron terrorism: Far from seeing these acts as terrorism, they are not seen as crimes at all. We see representatives of the BJP endorse those responsible for acts of terrorism against minorities by garlanding them, giving the acts of violence perpetrated by them legitimacy and sending the message across to other vigilantes that this form of terrorism is desirable
