A report by the Supreme Court Committee on Prison Reforms, led by Justice Amitava Roy, exposes a brutal reality: Indian prisons are not merely places of confinement. For many, they are death sentences delivered without trial.

In a span of just one year, 817 unnatural deaths occurred in Indian prisons and 660 of these were suicides. Uttar Pradesh alone accounted for 101 suicides, the highest in the country. https://countercurrents.org/2025/11/when-the-cell-becomes-a-coffin-counting-deaths-in-indias-prisons/
