Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR), in a press release on Tuesday, requested the Centre to reduce its taxes as it had the “opportunity and resources to help the common man”. He issued the statement to ‘offer explanation’ to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech in Parliament on Monday justifying the imposition of the tax.

Comments: Edwin Castelino Surprised to know that in the GST council voting, each State gets equal vote. As explained by PTR, Arunachal Pradesh that contributes 0.01 percent of GST and TN which contributes 12 percent of GST have the same say. Is this FAIR?

Sarthak Pathroliya GST system was implemented for consolidation of miscellaneous indirect taxes levied by the State but instead of ending it , the purpose was to ensure uniform taxation but it has failed grossly in the recent times.  We have GST but then we levy taxes on petroleum products under old system. Why ?
Union have more say then State Governments.  Furthermore a basic thumb rule for taxation which is always followed is levy taxes on luxury items and leave the essential commodities. Clearly this is being ignored.
India is a welfare state , and it levy taxes on high income groups to give some benefit to the common people , this concept is followed since a long time. But evidently the government has changed their taxation policy.
