The people’s struggle in Thoothukudi has been fought over decades, to challenge Vedanta’s impunity to pollute the villages for its own profits. The historic mass agitation on 22nd May 2018, which was a culmination of 100 days of continuous protest, led to a lethal firing by the Tamil Nadu police. The one-sided firing killed 15 people, including 17-year-old minor Snowlin, and left hundreds injured. Instead of dialoguing with the people protesting against the illegal and polluting operation of the Copper Smelter plant, the State Govt resorted to excessive and unjustifiable force and vilification of the movement.
