To say Hinduism is essentially casteism is like saying Judaism, Christianity, Islam and even Academia and Secularism is based on intolerance.
Monotheistic religions, which control the world's universities, believe in 'one' god and demand rejection of 'false' gods. What is false god? Anything that does not make sense to them. This is the basis of wiping out tribes and cultures across the world. Missionaries want to save the world from the Devil. Islam sees the pre-Islamic world as jahilia (ignorant). Science wants to save the world from superstition. Thus there is no room for alternate ideas, alternate beliefs - like rebirth and diversity. Only one life, and one way to live that life.
No one wants to admit that equality and social justice is rooted in the Christian and Islamic idea of God as creator of all man in his image, God the ultimate law-maker and judge. Of course Muslims and Christians do not agree what exactly these laws are. Be that as it may, everyone is expected to follow the same 'true' law. Inequality is the Devil's work.
The Left Wing, determined to save the world, is curiously aligned with Christian and Islamic worldviews. They will deny it, of course, despite training in postmodern philosophy. They seem to ignore that most writers of these ideas were White Men raised in Christian households reading Greek classics.
People have used various tools to distribute resources and respect. Caste is one of them. Nation is another. Just as caste created the heinous practice of 'untouchability' so does nation. We are trained by nations to despise other nations. In-groups often dehumanize out-groups to feel superior.
Rather than singling out Hinduism as 'evil' and follower of 'false' gods, academicians and activists need to ask why humans distribute resources and respect to groups rather than individuals. Isn't that the problem?

Opinion: Dragging the whole hindutva vs hindusim debate to the centre around monotheism, and the issue of false gods is also a bit too much. Perhaps it is because of monotheism as well as atheism, that you recognise that one needs to be agnostic to religion in the political field.. that you only take the distilate of good values and let it inform your political practice and keep the political theory to commonly agreed at minimum values as enshrined in the universal declaration of human right. Having been to many 'padas' (caste segregated hamlets) prejudice is high.. and this is also valid for the Christian sub-castes, and perhaps for the Muslim ghettos. Now we must see what is the trend.. while the younger generations of Christians at least move out of Christian colonies, I see that the trend in making jain, vegetarian colonies, the mathura-isation of living spaces.. the most modern phenomenon.. the celebration of festivals like ganpati is becoming less Tilak like and more radical assertion..
