Summary: The demographic shift & hate-mongering in Tripura should come as a warning. If not contained, the communal venom is likely to spill over to the rest of the country.
During the Mughal rule in Bengal, Both Hindus and Musims were a minority with Indigenous people dominant. Influx of Bengali Hindus cane in 1941 after Dhaka riots.
Since 1978, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (or CPI (M)) ruled Tripura. It managed to keep communal harmony over the decades. but n eglected tribal populations. and appealed to mostly the Hindus of Tripura.
In 1996, the tribes formed the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura. Later other tribal political parties joined the fray, and they renamed themselves as (INPT). In 2018, the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura by contesting with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
