Villagers are opposing the setting up of a 13.2 million tonne per annum(MPTA) capacity integrated steel project by JSW Utkal Steel Limited by Sajjan Jindal on land previously acquired for the South Korean steel major POSCO. A 900-MW captive power plant and a 10 MPTA cement unit are also proposed to be set up near the villages of Dhinkia, Govindpur, Nuagaon, Bayanala Kanda, Polanga and Jatadhar in Jagatsinghpur district. While the Odisha State administration was continuously warning people to stay indoors to remain safe from the impending cyclonic storm, the Jagatsinghpur district police entered the village Dhinkia under Erasama Block to arrest some people around 4.30 a.m. on 4th December, 2021. People resisted the police attack and a bloody fight ensued.

Wednesday, 23 April 2014  As per the direction of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Additional Superintendent of Police, Cuttack, Krushna Prasad Samal on Tuesday visited Dhinkia village at the proposed Posco project site and started investigation into the alleged brutal police attack on Dhinkia villagers on June 28 and June 29 last year.

The assault intensifies if people come in the way of the interest of corporates. Anti-Posco, anti-Tata, anti-Vedanta and anti-Aditya Birla resistances in different parts of Orissa are examples. So, we are in a police state in the post-economic reform-Orissa. The State’s behaviour with Dhinkia and Govindpur villagers is another example of the same attitude.
