At least 91 Indians have been forced to be fight alongside the Russian army on the frontlines, and so far, eight Indian nationals have been killed. Many families have been waiting agonisingly long for their loved ones to return home.
It all began with an online job scam and the dream of a better future in a foreign country. The victims told The Wire they were duped by YouTube job scamsters, with many pointing fingers at Faisal Khan, a Dubai-based YouTuber who runs the Baba Vlogs channel. They were allegedly convinced that they would work as non-combatant workers and helpers in the Russian army, far away from the frontlines.
Hemil’s father, Ashwin, told The Wire that his son was seeking better work opportunities in India when he came across a YouTube channel, Baba Vlogs, that promised unemployed Indians like him a job as a helper in the Russian Army. Despite constant reassurances from the channel clarifying that the particular post didn’t demand deployment, it ultimately did lead to Hemil’s forced deployment and his tragic death in a Ukrainian drone strike.https://thewire.in/rights/dead-trapped-and-waiting-to-escape-meet-the-indians-forced-to-fight-russias-war-against-ukraineAshwin Mangukiya travelled to Russia again seeking compensation for the loss of his son. He stayed in Russia for nearly two weeks at his own expense. He denied any kind of help from the Indian Embassy in Russia and the Indian government. According to him, the Russian government promised a compensation of Rs 1.3 crore within three months
The issue of Indians fighting the Russian war as soldiers also assumes significant political relevance as in the BJP’s campaigning for the general elections, it also pushed a narrative of Prime Minister Modi single-handedly putting a halt to the war to ensure the rescue of trapped Indian students in Ukraine.
The people from the Indian subcontinent were forced to fight a war without their consent, using fraudulent means. While some people have lost their lives as their families mourn for the dead, others are still going through an antagonising wait for their loved ones to return. The bureaucratic hurdles, the thousands of kilometres, and the uncharted territory only aggravate this incomprehensible situation. .

The Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT), a five-year-old entity with over 25,000 members working for aggregators like Uber, Amazon, and Zomato, helped Karnataka introduce a Bill for the welfare of gig workers in July after Rajasthan introduced a similar one in 2023. The Social Security Bill is a significant move for the union and its members and is a turning point in how India perceives labour unions. https://the-ken.com/story/algorithm-vs-unions-how-a-cab-driver-is-taking-the-fight-to-aggregators/

Once enacted, Karnataka will follow Rajasthan in becoming the second Indian State implementing regulations tailored to the welfare of these workers. While aggregators would be bound by onerous compliance requirements and additional cost obligations, other procedural aspects may also be demanding – for instance, dispute resolution mechanism under the Draft Bill, and the interplay between these provisions and those under the IDA.

"I have no major problem" with SEBI's handling of Hindenburg allegations; "I cannot say SEBI did a bad job": former SEBI Chairman, M. Damodaran, to Karan Thapar for The Wire. Speaking specifically to a question whether SEBI did a good job investigating the price ramping of Adani stock before Hindenburg, Mr. Damodaran said: “I cannot say SEBI did a bad job”. but says that this is on the basis of the information that he has before him....Issue revolved round disclosure and recusal. Both these were addressed by the SEBI statment..

https://www.rediff.com/money/column/rathin-roy-the-threats-to-indias-prosperity/20240722.htm These are less 'jobs' than low-paid activities. The contemporary Indian economy is one where:
45 per cent of the labour force works in agriculture.
The share of manufacturing in GDP has fallen to 13 per cent.
800 million people need subsidised food.
Over 100 million people between the ages of 18 and 35 are neither in education nor actively looking for employment.
All the problems of poor countries -- poverty, malnutrition, poor education, ill health, third-rate housing, difficult public transport, poor sanitation -- persisted, even as the rich enjoy globally opulent lifestyles.
These are failed economies, in contrast to the handful -- Ireland, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China -- where universal access to basic needs and prosperity became available to all as these countries grew richer.
India has only recently become a middle-income country.
My hope has always been that India will join the minority of nations that will secure a successful development transformation.
But looking under the hood, I see India on the terrible, but commonplace, road to prosperity failure.
There is still scope to remedy these matters, but this will require structural change.
Americans Distrusting Capitalism!! | Lessons For India?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEIo91ZHrFU | Deshbhakt Conversation With Ruchir Sharma Aug 21, 2024 Ruchir Sharma - What Went Wrong With Capitalism - where he explores why even in the USA...people are getting increasingly disillusioned with how the economy & capitalism. Capitalism should not be pro-business, but pro competittion. https://youtu.be/mEIo91ZHrFU?t=741 Incumbents can manipulate the regulations. The new ones have a problem.. What went wrong with capitalism? https://indianexpress.com/article/books-and-literature/what-went-wrong-with-capitalism-ruchir-sharma-book-review-9408451/ Low interest rates became the solution to every problem. Governments found it cheap to borrow. Except for a brief period under Bill Clinton, no government retrenched spending. So debt became a problem. The political choices in the US are tax cut and increased spending (Republicans) or tax and increased spending (Democrats). The Keynesian intuition that government spending should be counter-cyclical was replaced by a philosophy of a ‘permanent stimulus’.Low interest rates became the solution to every problem. Cheap money created asset bubbles which fuelled deep inequality and capital concentration. Prices were distorted. Finance began to dominate the economy. Finance also distorted the moral compass: the best and brightest, instead of figuring out productivity-enhancing innovations, were now manipulating complex spreadsheets. Meanwhile, all these were being done in the name of the poor.
https://richmedia.lse.ac.uk/publiclecturesandevents/20240703_1830_WhatWentWrongWithCapitalism.mp3 Sharma says progressive youth are partly right and that capitalism has morphed into “socialism for the very rich.” The broader issue, however, is socialised risk for the poor, the middle class and the rich; government is trying to guarantee that no one ever suffers economic pain by borrowing heavily to prevent recessions, extend recoveries, and generate endless growth. The result is rapidly rising debt and declining competition.
The order was passed on a petition filed by Shramik Janata Sangh, represented by Senior Advocate Gayatri Singh. "The Department of Social Welfare will also create a dedicated email address for each of the District Level Committees and Vigilance Committees. It shall also create a Social Media handle where citizens and non-governmental organisations can report instances of manual scavenging, which the District Level Committee and Vigilance Committee can examine. This will aid the Social Welfare Department in its statutory duty to ensure that manual scavenging does not take place. This is an addition to the duties cast on the officers under the Act of 2013," the Court said in its order passed on August 20.

WA Cooment: But, this is the regular practice here to keep the sewage disposal lines flowing. Till a feasible alternative is worked out, the maximum that one can expect is better safety protections for the manual scavengers. Right today, there's apparently none.
