In a crucial development, the Supreme Court of India has reserved judgment on a batch of petitions challenging the decision taken by the Union Government six years ago to demonetise the currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs.1000 denominations.
A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices S Abdul Nazeer, BR Gavai, AS Bopanna, V Ramasubramanian and BV Nagarathna on October 12 began hearing a batch of 58 petitions challenging the November 8 government circular that effectively pulled out 86% of the currency in circulation overnight.
