The implications of this are very disturbing for the cause of justice and the pursuit of public interest as anyone seeking to knock on the doors of justice would have to worry also about facing fines or even imprisonment. Hence this trend of punishing the petitioner should be checked in the interests of justice. As The Indian Express editorial has stated, “The Supreme Court must reflect on this worrisome inversion and call a halt to it before it does more damage to its hard won reputation as the upholder of the constitutional checks and balances.”
