Focus on capex, decreasing subsidies--how Modi govt's priorities are different from UPA's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plfc3Du4KWQ Dec 25, 2023 An analysis of the last 20 Budgets shows that the Modi Government's capex push isn't just all talk. It's also been reducing the share of subsidy spending, the opposite of the UPA, Deputy Editor TCA Sharad Raghavan
The comments!! :
@sankalp6872: It is also about the efficiency with which BJP delivers its subsidies and realizes its CAPEX. Gadkari's bridges and roads are winning bipartisan applause, while Modi's schemes for the poor are actually reaching the poor. This was NOT the case with UPA. INC's MNREGA was riddled with corruption.
@aniketbarve2009 Modiji is what INDIA wanted for long time as a PM. A tough, risk taking, no nonsense not yielding to pressure on domestic or international front.
@shishirsks This is called developmental politics. Keep freebies low and capital investments high for a long time, overall development will follow. However this is very difficult politics, which only few politicians such as Modi have been able to manage, as common people will not say no to freebies, especially when a desperate opposition promises the castle in the air and eventually socialists come to power!
(Trickle down economics?)
@Hey1234Hey More spent on Infrastructure > Better flow of goods > More production of goods > Cheaper transportation costs > More profitability > More competitive market > More ventures and startups > More job opportunities > Increase in per capta incomes and spendings > Eradication of poverty > Overall wealth of entire nation improves
Last 20 years' data shows capex share in spending has risen since 1st term of Modi govt in 2014-15 & that of subsidies has dropped. https://theprint.in/economy/rising-capex-share-falling-subsidy-burden-how-modi-govts-spending-priorities-differ-from-upas/1896931/ . Under UPA between 2004-2014, subsidies rose while capex fell. TCA SHARAD RAGHAVAN 25 December, 2023
An in-depth analysis by ThePrint of Union Budget documents over the period 2004-24 shows that the government’s actual capital expenditure will be 18.6 percent of its total expenditure for the financial year 2023-24, according to the latest budget. This is the highest it has been in the past 20 years, and continues a rising trend seen since the pandemic year of 2020-21.
At the same time, subsidies have been forming a lower share of total expenditure over the course of the Modi government’s term since 2014-15, except for a pandemic-induced spike in 2020-21. Since then, the declining trend has returned, with the share of subsidies in total government spending falling.
