A video from a popular bar in Noida shows people dancing while a dubbed Ramayan clip plays in the background. Police have arrested a person in connection with the incident.
In a 34-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Naseeruddin Shah spoke about a range of issues that have been in the news recently. They include the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur’s boast that “India has everything that any developed nation in the world has”, Foreign Minister Jaishankar’s criticism that the West “has a bad habit of commenting on others … if (they) keep doing this other people will also start commenting and they will not like it when it happens” as well as the Prime Minister’s claim, made most recently at President Biden’s Summit of Democracies, that India is “the mother of democracy”.
Besides the political motive, the arbitrary changes also reflect a lack of professionalism. Little respect was shown for discipline and pedagogical requirements.
The general criteria for ‘Rationalisation of the Content in the Textbooks’ are briefly spelt out somewhat vaguely:
“In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to reduce the content load on students. The National Education Policy 2020 also emphasises reducing the content load and providing opportunities for experiential learning with a creative mindset. In this background, the NCERT has undertaken the exercise to rationalise the textbooks across all classes.”
