*31st July, 2023:* Excerpts of Statement: Numerous national platforms, people’s organizations and social activists from across India lent solidarity to the ongoing democratic protests by the Gujjar Bakarwal and other tribal communities in Jammu and Kashmir, who have been resisting a politically-motivated Bill of the Union Govt, that seeks to grant Scheduled Tribe status to non-STs in the region. The statement, initiated by NAPM, has been endorsed by many adivasi and other activists, advocates, academics, retired bureaucrats, concerned citizens from more than 15+ states, and from within Jammu and Kashmir, in solidarity with the ongoing struggle.
.. the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry and the National Commission of Scheduled Tribes (NCST), has in fact green signalled this proposal to include non-STs. .. This happened within a month of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s public announcement and assurance of reservations to the ‘Pahadis’ (non-STs) in Rajouri in Oct’ 22 ... the ulterior moves of the BJP Govt. to extend Scheduled Tribe Status to non-tribal groups and create further social strife in a region of historical conflict that has already been bearing the brunt of violence and militarization over decades. ..
... the Govt’s insistence on pushing through these Bills despite grassroots opposition, should not become a pretext for the State to view it only as a ‘‘law and order problem’ and crack down on the democratic movement. Be it in Manipur or J&K, the BJP’s anti-tribal and anti-people policies must be opposed by citizens across India and **peaceful political resolution to the tribal struggles needs to be explored. *
Why Does the Government Want Birth and Death Certificates for Property Registration? https://thewire.in/tech/aadhaar-birth-and-death-certificates-property Srinivas Kodali The Registration of Births and Deaths Amendment Bill is another backdoor to push Aadhaar on to the population, ignoring the protections given by the Supreme Court.
.. Linking Aadhaar to any system will make that system inherit the problems of Aadhaar.
Similar to how linking Aadhaar to your bank account allows fraudsters to steal your money using Aadhaar Enabled Payment System. An Aadhaar-based property records system will have a similar vulnerability.
The limitations the Supreme Court put on Aadhaar have been completely overturned by the government through its new laws. This allows private sector access to this data. Even with birth certificates, beyond the ideas of tracking the population, the government wants to share this data for the needs of the market. ..
Aadhaar has already been forced on the population at every point of life and there is no escaping this dystopian software monster. After forcing Aadhaar on welfare, banking, income tax, and voter IDs, the government is forcing it on property holders. If you want to inherit any property or own property, be prepared for this upcoming system.
No amount of court orders will stop this as the majority of people will be willing to submit to this illegal exercise.

We returned last night after four harrowing days of bearing witness in Manipur. Nothing had prepared me for what we saw. Manipur is fully a war zone, with sophisticated rifles, mortars, bombs, and massive mobilisation of ordinary civilians, in which the state does nothing to restore peace, ensure justice, protect civilians, or assist people in camps in which children already are displaying signs of malnourishment; but instead is often perceived to be taking sides in what threatens to grow into a civil war.
On both sides entire villages have been razed to ashes.
We spent many hours in seven relief camps on both sides of the “border”, met scores of community leaders from both communities (and even were caught once within a few hundred metres of raging cross-fire). The grief, the rage and above all the hate are boundless.
I searched desperately for signs of hope, of peace and healing in the immediate future. I could find this only in stories we heard in the camps of people of the “other” community who helped save lives.
I grieve for our people. I grieve for our beleaguered, broken land. I rage for the malign governments that we have installed.
